Silicone Vs ACRYLIC Adhesives
Silicone vs Acrylic, the two main types of adhesive used on Kapton tape. They each have their own pros and cons, the choice of the adhesive will depend on the application.
Silicone adhesive can withstand the highest temperatures, comfortably to 260°C(500°F). With our HT version, high-temperature silicone, this can even be pushed further up to 300°C(572°F). As such, it seems that silicone adhesives are more standard and preferred for most applications.
However, there are cases where acrylic would be a better fit. Such as reducing silicone contamination, low temperature, or low outgassing applications. Acrylic tends to be lower temperature, around the operating range of 150°C(300°F) to the short term of 230°C (450°F). They are a solid economic choice for Kapton tape in lower-temperature applications. While only being able to reach a lower temperature, it does have a higher adhesion, so it will stick better to some of those difficult surfaces. CGS also has low outgassing acrylic adhesive for aerospace applications.
To make it simpler, we made a graph showing the main point of silicone vs acrylic on the Kapton tape.
Kapton Tape with Acrylic Adhesive
Acrylic adhesives show better resistance to solvents, chemicals and water. It is usually more economical than silicone adhesives. Some of the characteristics of acrylic adhesives are as follows.
Excellent adhesion.
Good aging & UV resistance.
Great high temperature resistance.
Low outgassing.
Kapton Tape with Silicone Adhesive
Silicone offers the highest heat resistance among film adhesive tapes; it is also widely used for high temperature insulation. Some of the characteristics of silicon adhesives are listed below:
Great adhesion.
It can give consistent performance over wide ranges of temperature.
Excellent temperature range, up to 300 °C.
Clean removal.
